Glee Program set to run 2012/13

Emily_Malcolm
The Capitol Glee and Wee Glee Singers choral program, offered by Portal Players Dramatic Society at the Capitol Theatre as part of their education programming, is set to repeat another season of repertoire, musicianship, artistry and fun beginning September 2012. Glee is an exciting opportunity for children and youth to learn and have fun singing, dancing and performing rock, pop and classics in a theatre setting. Janet Schlackl, Glee director, studied both piano and voice and has been involved in music across Canada for 30 years, including directing various groups, performing as pianist and accompanist, and writing and directing musicals and short plays. Ellen Vander Putten, AVCM ARCT accompanist, began teaching piano as a teenager and has had a wealth of experience teaching and accompanying over the years. Janet and Ellen, along with Suzanne Levasseur who volunteers her time to work weekly with the Glee groups, teach -- through voice -- not only music but also important life skills such as poise, self-confidence, focus, problem solving, and teamwork.

There is no audition required for registration, so anyone ages 4 - 16 who is either musically inclined or just loves to sing and dance is eligible to join the Capitol Glee and Wee Glee program on Thursdays. As one Glee parent states, "Rehearsing each week and performing in our own theatre is a special opportunity for these kids."

To get on the Glee list for Sept 2012, call Janet Schlackl at 724-6008.

Capitol STAGES presents "Beauty IS a Beast"

BeautyIsABeastPoster
Toola and Loola have brought their fairy godmother membership cards and are prepared to use them to make Beauty’s life difficult as Capitol STAGES Youth Theatre Program’s yearend show brings to life this morality tale about a spoiled beautiful princess who relies too much on her beauty.
Program director Teresa Drew and the students of the STAGES program have been rehearsing this script written by D.M. Larson and adapted for STAGES by Drew since January and are very excited to show off all of their hard work.

Joining us for this production is “Jane Doe” a live band from Nanaimo. They will be playing all the music during the show and the kids are thrilled to have them with us. The show is about a princess that was given incredible good looks by her fairy godmothers at her birth, but since then has used her beauty poorly. Her fairy godmothers then take her looks away to see how she fares.

Rehearsals have been running in weekly classes separated by age on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “It is difficult to rehears a show in four separate pieces” says Drew “The actors don’t get the continuity of the script well.” All the classes have been getting together for extra rehearsals on Saturdays so that the students can get an idea of what the play will look like when it is all put together. The older kids all grumble about not being able to sleep in, but they all show up to rehears because they have fun when they get here.

Capitol STAGES is an after school drama program for children 4-16 that delivers a full working theatre experience to its students. Designed to be a serious but fun learning experience about what it takes to make a theatrical production work, STAGES runs through the school year and culminates each year in a big joint production.

“Beauty IS a Beast” plays Friday and Saturday, June 15nd and 16rd at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets are $5 each and are available at the door at the Capitol Theatre box office.

Three Billy goats with a lot of attitude, a gingerbread girl being chased by a lot of people that look like you may have seen them before, a play about a play about the three bears, weird and wacky farm animals running to tell the king something, and a poor guy that has his reputation ruined completely. Get ready for one extremely entertaining evening.

MusicMayhemWeb
Portal Players Dramatic Society and The Capitol GLEE program are pleased to present “Music Mayhem” on Tuesday, May 31st. This year end concert will feature the young men and ladies of the Capitol GLEE program including the adorable Wee-GLEE singers and they will be joined by local performer Christina Wynans as well as local band J-Walk.

The Capitol GLEE program began last September as a musical addition to the Capitol STAGES program. Instructor Janet Schlackl and accompanist Ellen Vander Putten have built a solid program for young people to enjoy vocal training and learn the basics of choral singing, all while exposing them to a variety of great music and allowing them to have a lot of fun.

“MusicMayhem” will be the first stand alone show for the program so they have invited along some amazing young local talent to join them.
Christina Wynans is a well know local musician with a stellar voice and a seemingly endless musical talent. She has performed at many local events and is a shining light in the ADSS band and music programs.

J-Walk is a three piece rock band that formed early fall of 2010, composed of ADSS students Lucas Bosma, Cameron Stefiuk and Graham Villette. The band continues practices in Villette's basement with hope of creating good music to make people dance. The three players create music influenced by,AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Oasis, Kiss, and many others. J-Walk now continues to look for new places to play, more songs to jam, and new ideas for music. They are really pleased to be performing in the Capitol for the first time.

“We are very excited about the show” says GLEE instructor Janet Schlackl “ We have worked extremely hard to bring some tough numbers into the show but the kids have done a fantastic job getting ready. It going to be a great night with some really interesting and varied music.”

Capitol GLEE’s Music Mayhem plays Tuesday May 31 at 7pm. Doors open at 6:30. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Capitol Theatre box office Tues- Fri 1pm-5:30pm or at the door.

STAGES Youth Theatre Production June 2 & 3, 2011

POSTER - STAGES Sam McGee WEB
“There are strange things done ‘neath the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold” These are the famous first lines of “The Cremation of Sam McGee” by great Canadian poet Robert W. Service and there will be strange things done on the Capitol stage as Capitol STAGES Youth Theatre Program brings to life a dramatic interpretation of this literary classic in their yearend show.

Program director Teresa Drew and the youngsters of the STAGES program have been working on developing this script all year and are proud of the work they have done.

“This show is written by the kids.” says Drew “I got the ball rolling and helped clean up the edges but what you will see on stage is all from them. The show breaks down various pieces of the poem and delivers them in interesting, unexpected and often hilarious ways.

In this show you will see an Inukshuk, some sled dogs, and many gold miners, along with Michael Jackson, Hillbillies, The Canucks, and Marge Simpson. We looked at each stanza separately and then chose songs for inspiration for our scripts, or were just inspired by the words of the stanza to create our own original pieces.

Capitol STAGES is an after school drama program for children 4-16 that delivers a full working theatre experience to its students. Designed to be a serious but fun learning experience about what it takes to make a theatrical production work, STAGES runs through the school year and culminates each year in a big joint production.

“The Cremation of Sam McGee” plays Thursday and Friday, June 2nd and 3rd at 6:30pm. Doors open at 6:00pm. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the Capitol Theatre box office Tues-Fri 1pm-5:30pm.
